Out of the Woods

If you know me, then you know that just as much as leather, the scent of sawdust sparks my creative fire. I've designed multiple pieces of furniture that the craftsmen in my life have realized. I spent a good deal of the summer designing wooden forms for use in Stash bag-building and spent the better portion of yesterday testing these forms for production.

There are stories of wood gathered, salvaged, and collected throughout our home and studio spaces. All of our guitar faces have some unique figure to them spalted and rare. In fact today we are setting up our mobile saw mill to slice into a salvaged tree to find a slab of wood for a piece that my partner and I have in mind.

So when I saw Herrlicht glasses, the perfect marriage between material and craftsmanship, well, heavy duty admiration ensued. Each pair is numbered. They are only available through two shops in New York and their demand well exceeds the rate at which Andres Licht can produce them. Expect to pay at least $1500 for his art.

Australian Graphic Artist, Brett Coelho works with a wide range of found materials and my favorite pieces are the text-driven from old signs.

Worthy Linen.

 

There is one wall in the Factory and many many crates that suggest my long-standing, unquenchable drive to collect linens, fabrics, trappings of another time and place. Pieces with stories captured in worn edges and stains and tags of places traveled.

Artist, Sara Rahbar takes such materials and elevates them into art in pursuit of answering lingering questions and conflicts that arise within herself and throughout the world.

An excerpt from her artist statement reads, "Its about falling, standing and attempting to survive it all. In the end we are all in exile, we are all just visiting and we all come to this world alone and we leave alone. But while we are here we try so desperately to belong to something, to somebody and to somewhere. This idea of trying to sort it all out and somehow try to make sense of it all, life, death and all of this suffering in between, this is my work and my life." 

Perhaps best known for her artistic rendering of various flags several years ago, the New York-based artist has a new exhibit. I have no faith left for the devil to take is currently showing at the Hilger Contemporary in Vienna.

Places, Strange and Quiet

German filmmaker Wim Wenders is perhaps best known locally for his collaboration with American playright and actor Sam Shepard on the films Don't Come Knocking and Paris, Texas. 

He is also a photographer with collections titled Pictures From the Surface of the Earth, Written in the West, and Places, Strange and Quiet.

Now, Wenders has now brought his talent to the field of dance. Today opens a film on the contemporary choreographer - Pina Bausch - who transformed dance with her radical and dynamic work. Read more at Dazed.

Veruschka

Drawing inspiration from Vera Lehndorff, known to many under her modeling pseudonym, Veruschka. She had an knack for transformation and pushing boundaries. And I suppose what I admire most about her is a willingness to release traditional tenets of beauty and explore her art unteathered.

Born in 1939, she experienced a childhood that began with privledge and transitioned to labor camps and was punctuated by eventual homelessness.

Discovered at age 20 by Ugo Mulas, she became a full-time model and many of her images are legendary. Considered the most beautiful woman in the world by Richard Avedon, she worked to reverse the expectations of perfection but ultimately chose to leave the world of fashion.
