We have a few issues

Four issues to be exact. REFUELED Magazine is going to drop this weekend. My main contribution to this issue includes photos of Monahans (sneak peek tomorrow) and the cover photo and story on singer-songwriter, Amy Cook (above). 

If you are just tuning in, REFUELED is a FREE (yes, free) online magazine that an ever-evolving group of creatives contribute to on a twice-yearly basis. Since issue one, I have volunteered services as a features editor and photographer/stylist and occasional talent scout. So far I've contributed feature stories and photography on the following:

The magazine is the brainchild of Chris Brown who currently runs the following blogs: Refueled, Fuzz, and Choka, as well as Refueled Films and Refueled Sidewalk Surfboards. Chris is the publisher, creative director, bulldog, and editor-in-chief. No, I have no idea when or if the man sleeps. 

The publication has evolved quite a bit in the last two years and I hope you enjoy Issue 4.

Details

Here is a peek at some of the details in our guest space. 

Bamboo, palm, lots of new and old vinyl, books, collected fossil and etched word rocks, a sea fan, an old magnifying glass, a record player, an oil painting from my great-grandmother's house, and a vintage Union Jack (traded with the Spartan man at Texas Rose Show - Chaz from Cape Cod) for a jalapeño margarita at Warrenton this past season.

Marburger Farm

It is a beautiful day in Texas. The humidity is low, the rain is gone, the sun is out. A day like this is perfect to hit Marburger Farm. Yes, we are still talking about Warrenton. 

Many great dealers out there. Some of my favorites include Urban Country, Breck Armstrong, Cibilo Antiques, and Magnolia Pearl. For a better look at what you will find at Marburger, check out my flickr set.

Trends in Taxidermy

Taxidermy seems to be a solid trend this year based on the booths I visited. Theresa of Garden Antiques Vintage at Zapp Hall in downtown Warrenton had a great collection of various taxidermy items shown above. Visit her for great deals and unique finds ranging from fowl to frame to vintage bikes to ephemera.

Hector the Collector

Those who really know Warrenton, know Hector the Collector.

He is always located under the huge oak tree and big top tent between the Bar W field and Renck Hall adjacent to Tin Star Cafe. He also has an outpost at the Texas Rose Show with my friend Susi and Fundustrial (who is also carrying several of my Stash Couture bags).

Want to buy off the wall? You need to see Hector. I am always amazed at the range of industrial oddities this guy comes up with. 

Hector is based in San Antonio and over the years I have seen him carry everything from amusement park ride parts, vintage toys, dishes, letters, great signage, lockers, religious relics, gumball machines, concrete statues, enormous bird cages, and unique ephemera. 

Vintage Boots are Made for Walking

My friend Judy Masliyah has been known around H-town for her great halter dresses, applique tees, and men's bowling shirts. But she is also one of the premier dealers in Texas for vintage western boots and shirts (shown above). Her goods are available in Houston at Retropolis, Sig's Lagoon, and Hello-Lucky. But if you are in Warrenton this week, you can catch her downtown behind the bead house.

Made and Remade in America

It's a weird thing. I have a sixth sense for finding something I'm looking for amongst the 200 plus acres of junk in and around Warrenton. We were about to give up when something made me angle over to a favorite Renck Field vendor - Joe Pete.

We are in the process of finishing a remodel that carved out a little office space for Stash Studios. We are transitioning a traditional house to something with a more modern vibe. So we needed chairs for a double desk and wanted something different. The base needed to be silver. Leather was desirable.

We loved the Devon Chairs from Restoration Hardware but just couldn't dig deep enough to order them. I just had an idea of these 1940s era silver base desk chairs. Simple. Clean. With a little recline. I was truly losing hope until I stumbled through Joe's booth and found not one, not two, but four chairs for $25 a pop. Now we have two for the office and two for the studio.

There is something beautiful about a 1948 made in America, Cole Steel desk chair. There is something magical about finding four of them in pristine working order. They will get a good cleaning and I will cover them in some of the leather around here. In case you are wondering why not leave them as is, well, that red hue isn't so red, it is more like orange. So leather it is. Stay tuned for the results.

Fayetteville

The Fayetteville show opens this weekend. Find Bruce and Julie Webb of Webb Gallery there as well as some great vendors from Louisiana. Don Weir did a feature on the Webbs in the last issue of Refueled Magazine.

The show is on the square and there are some good places to eat. Early in the morning is not the best time to shop the show. These guys are night owls and there is a great evening vibe on the square.

Bluehills

Bluehills is located on FM 237 past the Big Red Barn on the left as you head into Round Top. Shown above are the distinct horse sculptures at the driveways to the property and one of the tin buildings. Blink and you might miss it. 

Business cards are somewhere tucked away so I can't give you vendors by name but there are some good ones there.

Last spring the food was outstanding but virtually unknown. I hope they are able to attract the same vendor. Their meatloaf sandwich nearly launched me into a When Harry Met Sally cafe moment. And equally important, their "facilities" which can be accessed by walking between the metal buildings at the back of the parking lot are NOT small yellow boxes with names like JackPot. They are actually a little more refined in tin buildings with porcelain and a screen door. You may not think this is important now, but when you are there, you will thank me.

La Bahia

La Bahia opens this weekend. This is the first show as you exit 290 onto FM 237. The little white hall has a bit more going on around it then what is shown here before the show started. Shown above are photos taken of my favorite vendors, The Seed Box (who now has changed locations and is at Zapp Hall and Coles - both nearer to Warrenton).
